Liberating Islamic Studies from Sectarian Strongholds - From Sect to Scripture: Let Civil Society Teach Islam

Epigraph (Reading Time: Approximately 5-6 minutes)

إِنَّ هَٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ يَهْدِى لِلَّتِى هِىَ أَقْوَمُ
"Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright."
Qur’an, al-Isrā’ (17:9)

"The corruption of knowledge comes from blind following, where the intellect is suspended and truth is measured by personalities rather than by evidence."
Ibn Khaldūn, Muqaddimah

______________________________________________________________________________

Georges Clemenceau (1841–1929), the renowned French statesman, once observed:
"War is much too serious a matter to be entrusted to the military."

This assertion, pointed, provocative, and deeply reflective, can be applied to the contemporary teaching of Islamic Studies, perhaps with even greater urgency.

The instruction of this profound and sensitive discipline is far too consequential to be left solely to traditional clerics or, for that matter, to those holding degrees in Islamic Studies — whether MA, MPhil, or even PhD — without a broader intellectual and moral framework. In Pakistan’s current religious and academic landscape, formal qualifications alone often fail to guarantee depth, impartiality, or Qur’anic fidelity.

Too often, Islamic education in our context functions not as a bridge toward shared understanding but as a tool for entrenching sectarian allegiances. Instructors — sometimes inadvertently — glorify their sectarian interpretations, rarely subjecting them to critical scrutiny or independent thought. The Qur’an, rather than being approached as a living and dynamic source of moral guidance, is frequently reduced to a static text interpreted exclusively through inherited dogma.

This narrow, and at times rigid, pedagogical model contributes to the perpetuation of problematic theological ideas, such as:

  • That Jihad is primarily a militant endeavor for Islam’s expansion
  • That Khilafah must be re-established through political or militant struggle, often idealizing early history without contextual nuance
  • That Muslims are guaranteed salvation merely by virtue of their religious identity — mirroring the very presumptions the Qur’an critiques in the Children of Israel
  • That non-Muslims are to be viewed categorically as kafir in the most pejorative and exclusionary sense

These latent yet perilous assumptions often go unchallenged. Alarmingly, they persist in the religious imagination, although the Qur’an itself repeatedly contests such notions.

What is needed is not merely reform in curriculum but a reimagining of Islamic Studies as a discipline rooted in intellectual honesty, Qur’an-centric interpretation, historical awareness, and moral reasoning. It must rise above emotional rhetoric and uncritical loyalty to inherited sectarian paradigms.

The teaching of Islamic Studies must, therefore, be entrusted to individuals who combine academic integrity with spiritual sensitivity — people drawn not only from seminaries or universities, but also from civil society: scholars, educators, professionals, and thinkers who approach the Qur’an directly, engaging it with humility, rational inquiry, and a commitment to universal ethical principles.

Only then can Islamic Studies evolve into a truly transformative discipline, one that nurtures hearts, sharpens minds, and bridges divisions.

A Villager who related with my Book! 15th August, 2017

This villager from a Chak (Village) in Okara named Ali Ahmed made my day!!

I'd given a copy of my book to the Chowkidar of the house I visited. Ali Ahmed is the Chowkidar (guard) of a house on the back side of the house I visited.

So when I stopped my car on the back side of the house to take a photograph and was about to sit in the car this person walked up to me and said, "Are you Aamir?...Aamir Iqbal?.....Aamir Iqbal Yazdani?"

This caught my attention and I replied, "Yes. Do you know me?"

He said, "I've read your book with the guard and I recognized your face! I wanted to meet you and say that I relate to your story!! Also though I am an illiterate person I do Punjabi Sufi poetry! I also relate to your story!!!"

This actually was one of the most intense moments for me in life!! I was recognized through my book by the son of the soil - an illiterate villager belonging to a Chak in Okara!!! This gave me a most consummate feeling of richness than being recognized by a famous person!!! I felt there and then, the purpose of my book has been accomplished!

This is exactly what my book is about - being a traveller in the quest for truth. We all have our backgrounds, opportunities, colour, caste, creed, and religion but we ALL have ONE thing in common. We all can be and, should be, travellers in the quest for truth.

I feel the message in my book has reached home!

I asked him to narrate his Punjabi poetry to me!

Tribute to Professor Dr. Hafeez Sahib 24th July, 2017:

Tribute to Professor Dr. Hafeez Sahib:

Professor Dr Hafeez Sahib was my eldest son Waleed's father-in-law. His first anniversary (of passing away) falls today.

The simple definition of life is the existence of an individual human being. I find this definition incomplete. The very meaning of life is based on the 'interaction' of human beings.

One comes across scores of people with whom one interacts. Some are utter disappointments! Some are brilliant and influence the lives of others with their Midas touch. My connection with Professor Dr Hafeez Sahib was of the latter nature.

I consider it one of my major missing points in life to have met him but for a very short duration. God had bestowed Dr. Hafeez Sahib the power to positively influence whomever he met in life. He was a simple man who had a simple approach to making others like life. This attribute I think is the biggest service a human can grant his fellow human being.

Hureen and my children Khalid and Ahmed had a very short acquaintance with Dr. Hafeez Sahib. They had the opportunity of being counselled individually by Dr Hafeez Sahib. My children own this lifelong positive impact. That is the meaning of life!

With the scores of people and couples, Dr.  Hafeez Sahib counselled I am sure Allah shall be too happy to have him with Him rewarding and bestowing him with an unending life of eternal bliss and consummate contentment.

The three lovely children Anoop dear, Atabak and Aibak remain a living legacy of Dr. & Mrs Hafeez. They have been reared in the mould of their parents - as humane human beings. This is the definition of life.

May Allah grant immediate reward to Dr. and Mrs. Hafeez. Their lives and 'transfer' from this fleeting earth points to only one, singular fact - we shall all be meeting this couple in times to come.

My thirst for discussions on the subject of Sociology shall be quenched when I meet Professor Dr. Hafeez Sahib, Head of the Department of Sociology, Punjab University and ex-Principal Aitchison  College, Lahore in the life Hereafter.

Rest easy, Dr Sahib and Mrs Hafeez. We pray for the cleansing of your sins and a life of eternal paradise together blessed with Allah's forgiveness.

Allahummagh firlahu warrhamhu,
Allahumma jannata maa al abrar.

(Allah forgive them and have mercy on them,
Allah enter them in your paradise with your selected servants)

Suggestion for Every Traveller in the Quest of Truth 21st July, 2017

For 'TRAVELLERS IN THE QUEST FOR TRUTH':

Quoting Hadith is serious business.

Islam has two established sources of information - the Prophet's way of doing things in matters of religion, called the 'Sunnat' coupled with God's Divine Book, the Holy Qur'an. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) mentioned these two sources on his deathbed for us to adhere to, to remain on God's path.

After around 100 years of Prophet Muhammad's (saw) death, some people thought of collecting his sayings. Obviously being a Prophet of God and a respected person within his tribe and the Arabian peninsula at large his sayings carried a lot of weight.

These sayings are termed Hadith. These were of two nature. One was within the precincts of religion in which the Prophet clarified certain aspects of being asked. Another was based on a respected person in his community.

Prophet Muhammad's (saw) sayings based within the precincts of religion always conform to the word of God in the Qur'an. The Prophet (saw) never utters anything contrary to the word of God. This is very clear. This point is the crux of understanding Hadith.

Other sayings based on his stature as a respected person of his tribe and clan are to be understood in their correct perspective. These are not to be linked with religion, but rather as Prophet Muhammad's (saw) biography in matters other than religion.

The image shared is a saying by the Prophet, "Whoever incorrectly links a saying to me, may well consider his abode in hellfire (in the Hereafter)".

This makes complete sense. The Prophet of God left his 'Sunnat' and God's Qur'an for us to follow. Quoting Hadith contrary to these sources and without verifying can cause more damage than healing as clear by this saying (Hadith) of the Prophet.

A critical principle germinates from this fact: All Hadiths shall be understood in the light of the Qur'an. The Qur'an shall not be understood in the light of Hadith.

Last but not least, I'll end by narrating this Hadith in the form of prayer by Prophet Muhammad: "God show me the truth in the appearance of truth and enable me to follow it, and show me the untruth in the appearance of untruth and enable me to avoid it".

Iqbal Day 21st April, 2017:

It's Iqbal's Day!

Do try reciting Iqbal's poetry at home with your children.

Shikwa and Jawab e Shikwa may be a good choice. Anyone can read anything of his or her choice.

Do take out time tonight over cup of tea or post dinner.

Qur'an's Take on the issue of Blasphemy 16th April 2017:

Apropos the recent murders on blasphemy issue the Qur’an asks the believers to ignore such attitudes from people ridiculing the Prophet (sws) and its verses:

1). Quran (2:104):
“O you who have believed, say not [to Allah's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment”.

PS 'Ra'ina' meant the Shepherd. The nonbelievers used to address the Prophet (sws) in a subdued tone as the Shepherd. This has nothing to do with Jesus Christ's being the Shepherd. The context is different here. It was in a ridiculing manner. And God asked to use the word 'Unthurna' which meant kindly look at us with kindness.

2). Quran (5:57):
“O you who have believed, take not those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you nor the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah if you should [truly] be believers”.

3). Quran (5:58):
“And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not use reason”.

4). Quran (4:140):
“And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so, do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together”.

5). Quran (63:7):
“They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband." And to Allah belongs the depositories of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand”.

6). Quran (63:8):
“They say, "If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel there from the more humble." And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know”.

Alike Facial Lineament 9th April 2017

All hardliners who follow blindly through emotions end up with the same lineament.

God's plan is to read His signs through the dispensation of one's intellect. Indeed, that is the only reason, His last testament, the Qur'an ONLY addresses people who employ their intellect. God really has no time for emotionally charged blokes who run on high emotions.

Please open the Quran from anywhere, and just see where God presents His reasonings, He ends up the reasoning for people who:

عقل والے، تدبر کرنے والے، غور و فکر کرنے والے، دانش مند لوگ، بصیرت رکھنے والے، سننے والے وغیرہ۔۔۔

God addresses the 'travellers in the quest for truth' irrespective of the individual's mental capability and IQ. Open the Quran and see this fact. People with the above attributes (in Urdu) carry a different facial lineament.

Miscellaneous 5th April, 2017

This is the most humble remark ever! The same attitude was of Arther Ashe, the 1974 Wimbledon Champion. God bless them both. Actually, God will. My heart tells me! But then again God is No. 1, as Mohammad Ali said!!

It's a wonderful life here on earth. But we see sorrow, murders, apartheid, arrogant behaviours of white-skinned people, the KKK, Hitler's butchering of 6 million innocent Jews, usage of bombs on innocent civilians in wrongly based pretext of war; this makes every 'traveller in the quest for truth' ponder!

Ponder one must! No one can remain oblivious to these atrocities. These actions have to reach their logical end. Justice has to be meted out. How? When? Where? By whom? Will it be fair play then, or again the oppressor will win over the oppressed?

The answer lies in God's last Divine book - the Glorious Koran. It dilates on these questions and addresses 'the travellers in the quest for truth' who want to employ their intellect (as in all other matters in life) with full reasonings, sound reasonings and by reiterating giving examples.

PS As in all other knowledge Koran too has to be read with its context and reference to the context. It cannot be understood in isolation.

Barring a Particular Scholar's Books in a Book Fair by Jamaat e Islami in Peshawar University 22nd March, 2017:

Recently, we witnessed an episode barring a scholar's (Mr. Javed Ahmed Ghamidi's) books at the Peshawar University Book Fair.

The bane of Jamaat e Islami. Their self-righteous attitude is pathetic. These goons must have offered congregational prayers in the mosque after beating up this boy near death and met their Jamaat leader for a meeting with his tacit approval of this act.

Certain points have to be presented for 'Travellers in the Quest for Truth'. Why I say 'Travellers in the Quest for Truth' is because God too, only addresses people who employ their intellect in matters of deciphering truth from falsehood. Indeed, God's Qur'an is replete with only one human condition to understand His word - that is to employ one's intellect ONLY, not emotions!

Hence, my points are ONLY for those whom God says in His Qur'an:
"People who use their intellect,
People who do deep pondering,
People with insight,
People who see beyond what their eyes see,
People who follow their conscience,
People who yearn for the truth rising above their religion of birth,
People who yearn for the truth rising above all kinds of prejudice,
People who spurn their family and tribal affiliations to yearn for the truth,
People who endeavour to look at the correct perspective of things,
People who relish reasoning based on plain truth,
People who do not hold onto false expectations,
People who when come across truth, of which their heart vouches, then, do not spurn the truth but step forward and embrace it,
People who do not follow their lust blindly, people who do not follow a religious scholar blindly,
People who do not follow any school of thought blindly,
People who question albeit their questions are purposeful,
People who are not arrogant,
People who do not consider themselves self-righteous,
People who do not remark on other person's feelings knowing ONLY God knows what is in the other person's heart,
People who do not play God".

Let me present my points which are addressed to people with the above attributes:
1). Who has given this mandate to people in judging who is correct and who is not?
2). Who has this ability to tell what is controversial and what is not? Is it on hearsay? If so, then he or she is guilty of prejudice. If not, then please answer this question.
3). A Scholar is a human being. Human interpretations are subject to errors. Following a scholar blindly is an abrogation of one's human intellect. Blind following is rejected by God in all its manifestations. Qur'an negates this concept with full vigour through sound reasoning. Why are then, a group of people or different groups following their scholars blindly?
4). Barring a Scholar's book or books is like putting shackles and locks on the minds of the young people in the University. This is most critical. Who has the authority to tell the youth what to read and what not to read? Who?
5). This Jamaat e Islami and their crony Jamiat in the Universities across Pakistan are up to their necks in portraying themselves as being self-righteous. Who has given them this mandate to tell people what is right and what is wrong? Who has extended them this authority to interfere in people's lives and tell them the truth?
6) This (forceful) coercion by them in the garb of being polite is like 'playing God'. Who has extended the Jamaat e Islami and their crony Jamiat in the Universities around Pakistan to play God?
7). Apart from God's apostles, whom God appointed Himself, no one can be granted the status of an apostle of God. Since apostles are God's direct appointees, hence, they are Divinely driven. Rest all are human beings and their interpretations are subject to reasonings. Who has imparted the status of an apostle to the Jamaat e Islami and the University to tell people what is right from wrong and bar books of any kind?

Read. Read every Scholar's book. Accept or reject based on sound reasoning.

God, says in His Glorious Qur'an (16:125): "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a best way. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided".

Please do not play God. Let the youth of our country read every piece of literature. Let the youth of our country decide for themselves.

I assure the youth shall never go astray as long as they follow their conscience.

Presenting My Book to Sardar Assef, ex Foreign Minister of Pakistan16th March, 2017

Respected Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali Sahib,

Salam

I am writing regarding the book I presented "حق کی تلاش کا مُسافر - آپ بیتی" to your good self through Sardar Usman.

Sir, I hope you've got the chance to read it! You have a hectic schedule. I really appreciate this fact. My request as presented earlier to you while presenting the book was to patronize the book through your reading. I am not at all looking for any accolades! It's only that my desire is for this book to be read by people of stature in our society.

I want God to take over my book from here! I've done my bit albeit through God's blessings; but I really feel there is an underlying message in my book for every traveller in the quest for truth, irrespective of one's caste, creed, colour, religion.

This is a potent aspect this book brings out in the forefront. Being an autobiography, obviously the life surrounds me. But there are these messages, inferences, re visiting of childhood concepts based on intellectual reasonings and with its reference to the context that play a pivotal role in bringing out the innate thirst for truth-seeking in every individual who would want to employ his or her intellectual rising above all prejudices in life. I feel this book only relates to people for whom exercising their sense of intellect excites them!

Dear Sir, I sincerely hope you'll take out time to read this book and, if you so desire, to discuss the points, at your convenience, that you may seem fit for a discussion!

Regards and Sincerely,

Aamir Yazdani

Visit to Sikh Sacred Place in Nankana Sahib 19th February, 2017

Earlier in the day I visited Nankana Sahib off Sheikhupura.

Nankana Sahib is the holiest place for Sikhs around the world. It holds sanctity as Makkah does for Muslims.

I was most perturbed and disturbed to see a local mosque less than maybe 50 yards from the entrance of the Sikh holiest place. The disturbing aspect was the Minaret of this particular mosque was towering over the Sikh Gurdwara.

The mosque minaret also had no less than 8 loudspeakers for the Muslim call for prayer - the Azan. 8 loudspeakers mean 4 in the usual North South East West and the other 4 in North West, South West, North East, and South East directions!

All of God's religions teach one main principle. In fact, humanity has the universal message of tolerance and respect for other religions. Basically tolerance towards fellow human beings. More so the Holy Divine Book of God - the Qur'an explicitly states tolerance towards others.

Let me make a point here. During the times of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a mosque by the name of Zarar was made to demolish as its soil was being used by hypocrites against Muslims to create unrest and mischief. The mosque was demolished. This sends a clear message for all times to come! Mosques may be demolished by the Government if deemed to spread mischief or used to demean other religions.

The sight of the overbearing and overwhelming minaret of the mosque near the sacred Sikh temple made me very sad as a Muslim!

Respecting Scholarship in the Post-Prophet (pbuh) Era: A Lesson in Humility and Grace (22nd January, 2017)

Epigraph:

"If you find a Hadith attributed to me that contradicts the Qur'an and the Sunnah, then throw it against the wall."
— Imam al-Shafi'i

(Reading Time: 4.5 to 5 minutes)

Post-Prophet Era: A Human Endeavor in Understanding Faith

After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), all scholars, no matter how revered, remain human beings engaged in the noble yet fallible endeavor of understanding and explaining the faith. Their research and opinions, however learned and pious, are fundamentally human efforts — deserving of respect but never beyond question.

In matters of religion, the ultimate authority rests solely with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is he alone whose teachings command unconditional acceptance. Everyone after him, no matter how learned or saintly, remains susceptible to human error. Therefore, while we value and benefit from scholarly efforts, we must remember that their insights can never equate to revelation.

The Prophet’s Responsibility: Conveying the Qur'an and the Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) divinely entrusted responsibility was twofold:

  1. To convey God's message in the form of the Qur'an,
  2. And to establish the religion through his practice, known as the Sunnah.

Before his passing, the Prophet meticulously ensured that both these pristine sources — the Qur'an and the Sunnah — were fully conveyed, established, and adopted by his companions. The companions received them with complete agreement (ijma') — meaning there was a unanimous consensus about their authenticity and practice.

Furthermore, these two fundamental sources have reached us through the process of tawatur — uninterrupted, continuous transmission by large groups across generations, leaving no room for doubt or fabrication.

This uninterrupted chain of living practice explains a remarkable reality: even our grandmothers and great-grandmothers in rural areas — often illiterate and unfamiliar with scholarly texts — knew how to read the Qur'an in Arabic and performed fundamental religious practices like prayer (namaz), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage (hajj and 'umrah).

How did they learn these sacred acts? Through the living tradition passed from their parents and grandparents, without formal education, without scholarly books — simply through unbroken, communal practice. Religion, therefore, has been preserved and remains with us in full vigor and clarity, like the shining sun.

A Lesson from Imam Bukhari’s Humility

Even in the most respected compilations of Hadith, such as Sahih al-Bukhari, this principle of humility and human limitation is acknowledged. Imam Bukhari himself, in his introduction, emphasized that his compilation was a historical account of the Prophet Muhammad’s sayings and practices, not a divine revelation.

Thus, out of profound respect and scholarly caution, it became the tradition for scholars, when quoting a Hadith, to add: "أو كما قال" — meaning "or as he said."

This humble phrase signals that, while the core message is faithfully preserved, the exact words of the Prophet may not always be captured perfectly in every narration. Therefore, the status accorded to any reported Hadith carries an element of careful assumption, unlike the Qur'an and Sunnah, which were transmitted with full certainty.

Such carefulness reminds us that while Hadith literature is immensely valuable, it must be engaged with responsibly and respectfully, with an understanding of human fallibility in narration.

The Art of Agreeing and Disagreeing

Muslims today must master the art of agreeing and disagreeing with scholars, and with each other, politely and constructively. Engaging with religious thought is not about blind acceptance or wholesale rejection; it is about critical engagement, carried out with dignity, compassion, and understanding.

Sincere differences in interpretation are natural and have historically enriched Islamic scholarship. What matters is the spirit with which we engage: with hearts seeking truth, minds open to discussion, and tongues restrained by respect.

Differences of opinion are not a flaw in human society — they are by divine design. God, in His infinite wisdom, created diversity of thought as a test for humanity:

"Had God pleased, He could have made you one community, but he did not do this because He wanted to try you by whatever He has blessed you with. So, try to outdo one another in good deeds. To God shall you all [one day] return. Then He will disclose upon you all the things in which you have been differing –."
(Qur'an 5:48)

This diversity invites patience, reflection, and humility. It is a reminder that in matters of faith and understanding, sincere dialogue must replace harsh judgment.

And so, when engaging with others, especially in religious matters, the Qur'an teaches us the art of beautiful dialogue:

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction and argue with them in a way that is best. Truly, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His way, and He knows best who is rightly guided."
(Qur'an 16:125)

Thus, respectful disagreement is not a sign of weakness — it is a mark of true wisdom and faith.

Conclusion: Upholding the Ethic of Mercy

In our pursuit of religious knowledge, let us remember that scholarship is a human endeavor, and humility is its crown. By listening attentively, questioning respectfully, and debating graciously, we not only honor the scholars before us but also embody the noble mercy and wisdom taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Through love for the truth and courtesy toward others, may we grow into a community that seeks knowledge with courage and practices respect with even greater strength.

The Necessity of Presenting the Qur'an EACH TIME by Religious Scholars 21st December, 2016

Maulana Tariq Sahib is very respectable. Following submission with due respect to all:

His video on the two grandsons of Prophet Muhammad (saw) carries only an emotional appeal.

All paternal grandfathers around the world love their grandsons and daughters exactly the same way. Please allow me to say there is not an iota of difference in love towards grandchildren.
This video does not carry any religious connotation. Religion is only to be dispensed through God's Last Scripture - the Qur'an.

God Himself says so in the last verse of Surah 50, "We are most knowing of what they say, and you are not over them a tyrant. But remind by the Qur'an whoever fears My threat".

I wish the good gentleman could present the Qur'an "each time" he addresses his addressees. More so when one becomes a religious public figure. Indeed, this is what the Holy Prophet (saw) did each time. He only presented the Qur'an to his addressees.

War is a Serious Business 21st December, 2016

Remarks on a retired General's comments:

Are you crazy?!!! What bloody revenge?!!! War is serious shit. No one is allowed to perpetrate any adventure at the nation's behest.

I strongly resent and condemn this most irresponsible statement. It should be condemned with full vigour.
Army chaps are ONLY subservient to the Prime Minister of Pakistan. They are there to ONLY protect our borders. Not to take revenge and fulfill their Cowboy instincts.

Kindly go home on retirement and lead a quiet, reclusive life. Let the elected civilian government take its course. Play the revenge game on the PlayStation on your computer please in your 2 kanal palatial mansion.

This is really something. It clearly relates to this Divine Verse from God:

4:1 O People! Be conscious of your Sustainer, who has created you out of one living entity, and out of the two spread abroad a multitude of men and women. And remain conscious of God, in whose name you demand [your rights] from one another, and of these ties of kinship. Verily, God is ever watchful over you!

This takes the 'ponderer' to Adam & Eve. Adam/Eve creation and details are found in all Divine Scriptures - the Torah, Psalms of David, the Bible and the Koran.

Koran being the last Scripture only accentuates the aspects of this creation which relates to us in certain ways for our understanding.

Like God always desires and yearns for us all - to employ our intellect in reading His signs.

The word Verse in Koran in Arabic (the language of its revelation on Arabs then) is called an " AYAT". This word literally means a sign. The universe of God; both external and in our inner side are replete with His signs. The signs abound so much that God does not need to be in the forefront physically for all to see. He expects a soul to 'read His signs' by employing his/her intellect.

Like in any field of education and learning one has to shed prejudice, arrogance, pre conceived ideas to learn and progress on in life.

Reaching God through reading His signs is no different.

An Academic Reflection of the Return of Jesus before Doomsday (the Hereafter) 8th November, 2016

EPIGRAPH: Qur’an (4:157-158):

“…and because of their claim: “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of God.”– even though neither did they kill him nor did they crucify him; in fact, the matter was muddled up for them. Those who are disagreeing in this are afflicted with doubts about it; they have no knowledge about it; they are only following conjectures. They certainly did not slay him; in fact, God had lifted him up to Him. And God is Mighty, very Wise.”

The Qur'an in Surah Maryam (Chapter 19) first details the miraculous birth of Prophet Yahya (John, peace be upon him) and concludes the passage in verse 15 with the divine proclamation:
"And peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive."

Immediately following, the chapter narrates the birth and speech of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him), culminating in verse 33, where Jesus himself echoes the same divine pattern:
"And peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive."

The identical linguistic structure used for both prophets indicates that both are being described in terms of their complete, divinely ordained life spans — from birth to death to resurrection. If one were to assert a return for Jesus (Isa), one would also need to propose a similar return for Yahya (John), who, according to Islamic tradition, has no prophesied second advent. The verse, therefore, suggests a completeness and finality in the life cycle of Jesus, as affirmed by the Qur'an.

Further, in Surah al-Maida (5:116-117), the Qur'an recounts a conversation between God and Jesus in the Hereafter, where God asks:

“Did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as gods besides Allah?’”
To which Jesus responds:
“Never did I say to them anything except what You commanded me to — worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I dwelt among them; but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are Witness to all things.”

This passage clearly shows that Jesus denies knowledge of events that occurred after he was “taken up” indicating that he did not return to earth following his ascension. If he were to return before the end time, he would logically be aware of the people’s misattribution of divinity to him, which contradicts his statement.

God mentions in the Qur’an (3:55) that He shall protect Jesus from any harm and will lift him to Him after giving him death:

“At that time when God said: “Jesus, I have decided to give you death and lift you up to Myself and I shall purify you from these who have disbelieved in you and shall grant your followers supremacy over these disbelievers until the Day of Judgement. Then to Me finally you shall all have to return. So, at that time, I shall give verdict on what you have been differing in.”

Moreover, regarding the anticipated figure of al-Dajjal, Islamic tradition describes him as the "False Messiah" or "The Great Deceiver." The word Dajjal means a “Deceiver”, “Impostor”, or “One who covers the truth with falsehood.” The Root Word comes from the Arabic root word: د-ج-ل (D-J-L). The verb dajala means: “To smear,” “to cover,” or “to coat with gold or varnish,” especially to cover something false with an appearance of truth.

In classical Arabic, dajl was used to describe someone who falsifies, tricks, or covers reality with lies. For example, a camel might be called mudajjal if its skin is covered with tar to conceal defects.

So, "al-Masiḥ al-Dajjal" literally means: “The False Messiah who deceives or obscures the truth.” This linguistic root ties perfectly into the Islamic portrayal of Dajjal as someone who pretends to be divine, performs false miracles, and misleads people into believing he is the true messiah.

Narrated Abu Hurayrah:

The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said:

"The Last Hour will not come until ten signs appear: a landslide in the East, a landslide in the West, and a landslide in the Arabian Peninsula; the Smoke; the Dajjal; the Beast of the Earth; Gog and Magog; the rising of the sun from the west; and a fire that will emerge from the depths of Aden, driving people to their place of assembly."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 7286)

This is an adjective meaning “a great deceiver”. It has also been referred to as al-mash al-dajjal. The implication is that before the Day of Judgement, a person will falsely claim to be Jesus (sws) and, while making use of the notion of the return of Jesus (sws) found in Muslims, Jews and Christians, will deceive people through some of his magical powers. It is mentioned in some narratives that he would be blind in one eye and his deception would be so evident to the believers that it would be as if they would see disbelief written on his forehead. I am quoting this Hadith both from Sahih Al Bukhari and Sahih Al Muslim:

Narrated Anas:
The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said:
"No prophet was sent but that he warned his followers against the one-eyed liar (Ad-Dajjal). Beware! He is blind in one eye, and your Lord is not so, and there will be written between his (Ad-Dajjal's) eyes (the word) Kafir (i.e., disbeliever)."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7131)

Narrated Hudhaifa ibn al-Yaman:
The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
"The Dajjal will be blind in one eye, and between his eyes will be written 'Kafir' (disbeliever), which every believer will be able to read, whether literate or illiterate."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 7375)

The Qur'an, however, does not mention Dajjal directly. These narratives arise from Hadith literature. As students of the Qur'an, it is crucial to approach such texts critically and always in light of the Qur’an, which is described by Allah as the Furqan (the criterion between right and wrong), the Meezan (the scale of justice), and the Muhaimin (the guardian and protector of all other revelations).

The Qur'an talks about the personality of Jesus (peace be upon him) from many angles. It mentions his mission of preaching and gives details about his life in several places. The Qur'an also often speaks about the major events of the Day of Judgment. The return of such an important prophet from the heavens would be a huge event. Yet, despite many chances to mention it, the Qur'an does not refer to this event even once. This silence raises an important question: can human understanding be truly satisfied with such an omission? It’s difficult to accept.

Thus, any external source — Hadith or otherwise — must be subordinate to the Qur'an and measured against its clear directives. The Qur'an remains the supreme authority in all religious matters.

Lastly, there is a pressing need for introspection among the Muslim ummah. Our current decline — morally, socially, and politically — cannot be rectified by speculative eschatological hopes alone. The romanticization of an apocalyptic triumph through the emergence of al-Mahdi, the return of Jesus, or a decisive war is not only theologically ungrounded but also reflects a form of escapism. Islam calls for moral actionconscious faith, and personal accountability, here and now.

The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that salvation lies in our conscious relationship with God, not in identity, sect, or ancestral legacy.

Sunnah of the Prophet (sws) & Hadith are two separate Entities 20th December, 2106

Reply to an elder respected Lady:

I am sure you do not relate to this statement!!! How can our prophet utter this statement and degrade the good sense of women folk; especially in the capacity of a wife?!! The Qur'an is very clear in its judgment. It says Allah has created men and women equal barring their obvious physical differences. Furthermore, Allah says He has provided a level playing field to men and women in piety, doing good deeds, etc.

The Prophet has said the best amongst us is the one who is the best with his wife!! How can this statement be correlated with the above-posted statement of our dear prophet? The wife's advice is as valuable as the husband's. Both go hand in hand. With the highest regard to you, Nazo Baji let me please submit humbly, that all hadiths are to be adjudged in the light of the Qur'an and prophets Sunnah and not vice versa.

Prophet Sunnah is NOT Hadith. Sunnah is the act of a prophet within the confines of religion. Hence, his travelling mode like a mule/donkey/horse is NOT religion. His attire was an Arab cultural attire. Hence, it is not religion. His miswaak (wooden branch used as a toothbrush) is NOT a religion. It was the custom then. Cleanliness is Sunnah and a religious desire. Not the twig miswaak. We have toothbrushes now.

Sunnah is only the acts that the Prophet (sws) did as religion and further asked his companion to adopt them. Hadith is ONLY the Prophet's (sws) narrations subservient to the Qur'an and does not inherently add anything to religion.

The religion of Islam is Allah's Qur'an and the Prophet's (sws) Sunnah. In fact, it is in the reverse order. First, the Prophet's (sws) Sunnah is based on Prophet Ibrahim's Sunnah. Prophet Ibrahim was 2000 before prophet Muhammad (saw) and then the Qur'an.

Allah is very touchy, if I may use this term, in having His religion presented through His Qur'an. And if Hadith is to be quoted then the Hadith has to follow Qur'an's dictates. It can never ever contradict Allah's Qur'an and the prophet's Sunnah.

Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's blessings be showered on him, was the most loving, caring husband among us all.

Plucking Qur'an Verses sans Reference to the Context 3rd November, 2016

This classic case of plucking Qur'an verses from thin air and quoting WITHOUT REFERENCE TO THE CONTEXT:

1). Lahore witnessed unfortunate children's kidnappings recently. People started sharing Qur'an verses. Those verses specifically address the unbelievers around the Prophet at that particular time; who were knowingly rejecting the Prophet's call to God. Through His Divine revelation, God informed of such people, since God only knows the matters of the hearts of people. The Prophets or angel Gabriel even do not have access to the matters of the heart.

It is in such a situation where the first addressees of the Prophet deny the Truth 'Knowingly', 'Willingly', 'Deliberately' does God declare:

Qur'an (36:9): "And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see".

2). Our Lahore city experienced SMOG the whole day yesterday. It was unprecedented. People started sharing Qur'an verses. These verses relate to the events unfolding at the advent of the Hereafter. It has no relevance with SMOG:

Qur'an (44:10-11): "Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. Covering the people; this is a painful torment".

When we start quoting the Qur'an WITHOUT ITS REFERENCE TO CONTEXT and place them in isolation then we are bound to correlate unrelated things to it.

Cartoon Contest (on Prophet Muhammad) in the USA 21st October, 2016

Dear Mr. Editor,

Following are my views on the recent cartoon contest in USA, for your kind perusal for the Letters to the Editor section.

Regards,

CARTOON CONTEST IN USA

From the time we wake up till the time we go back to sleep, all our activities around the globe have a context.

It follows then that to understand human actions and reactions we should see them in their proper context and not in isolation. We cannot merely pluck a singular human action out of thin air, then scrutinize and analyze it. We wouldn't be more mistaken and wrong in doing so.

An American section of society recently held a cartoon contest on our Holy Prophet. If we see this in context, things will fall in the right place. This particular group has hatred towards Islam built on the actions of Muslims spreading terrorism around the globe. They find this version of Islam quite sickening, threatening their way of life. They have found this contest as a way of venting and expressing their stance.

Similarly, it needs to be understood that the Muslim section of society around the world, spreading terrorism, does not represent Muslim thoughts around the globe. Hence, these factions are mercenaries at best owned by no one and disregarded by civilized people around the world.

These are the occasions where we should raise the correct perspective of Islam peacefully for the frustrated people to understand.

Reply to a young mother:

Meher Bano koi aisi baat nahin hai meray khayal mein. (Mehr Bano I wouldn't agree with your statement).

You are a complete woman in your own person. What does a woman want innately? A family (same as a man), a loving spouse (same as a man, in your case), good education (same as a man), children (same as a man), home with warmth (same as a man).

These bounties of life are not enslavements. They are the cherished highlights of every couple on earth. Visit any corner of the earth. Man, Woman, Children, Home, Education - these are the cherished fruits of life every soul endears.

I find the above statement quite naive. It only wants to portray women as a slave. This is not slavery. This is the very essence of life Meher Bano!

And God has bestowed you with all these gifts here. Cherish it. Relish it. Remain grateful to Him.

Spreading Mischief on God's Earth has a Consequence 26th August, 2016

There is this disturbing video on Facebook of two young brothers aged 7 in Syria who survived a bombing and have lost their third brother. I want to share my sentiments which I have posted on my wall:

Tauba (May God forgive me).

Who is responsible for this? Whosoever is responsible shall rot in hell in the afterlife. This rhetoric of no life after life is totally rubbish. All those who have had a hand in this conflict in any way shall rot in hell-Muslims or non-Muslims. God is fair.

They can amass billions (which they are) by these conflicts and selling weapons and conspiring and can live in posh villas around the world but then the claws of death shall wrap around their necks. The moment of reckoning shall start there and then. They'll enter their rotten graves empty-handed but shall rot in hell for eternity. Have you ever imagined what is eternity? It's not till death on earth whereupon the worst of punishments end. The punishment in the Hereafter is an abode where there shall be no death.

Conversely, no death for the servants of God; as they shall enjoy the grace and being guests of God for eternity-an unending reward for a life of believing in God and the life hereafter here. And let me add this reward and this life shall be most tangible as we feel now.

And no death for the wretched of the earth; as they shall rot in hell bearing the wrath of God for eternity. An unending hell in the hereafter as a consequence of spreading mischief on God's earth. And let me add this hell and this wrath of God shall be tangible as the people who disbelieved God's prophets Noah, Lot, Moses, and Muhammad felt.

God's decree in the Koran, Chapter 99:
"When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake

And the earth discharges its burdens

And man says, "What is [wrong] with it?" -

That Day, it will report its news

Because your Lord has commanded it.

That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.

So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,

And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."
